School civil defense
I can remember those tile walls that made a school look like a big bathroom.
We did some CD drills and so on in grade school, but by the time I was in high school, schools had pretty much abandoned 1950's style CD. However a lot of schools were designed to serve as CD shelters, and lots of those buildings still remain.
One thing that has changed- almost no schools now have a shop or shop classes, they are too much of an insurance liability. After all, what insurance firm wants to take the risks associated with letting contemporary middle schoolers run dangerous woodworking machines?
Yes, back in the day, lots kids rode their bikes to school in good weather.
Fire fighting for homeowners. 1950's
Back 60 years ago, a lot was expected of average people when the nuke war came. I doubt real people would have exhibited this level of calm, much less put out the fire without messing up their hair or dress. Still, these kinds of films gave people something to do and helped them maintain a sense of control during a stressful and paranoid era.
Except for fire extinguishers, this kind of home firefighting equipment is not available any more. It's hard to imagine that a modern hand sprayer would help much with a major fire. There is also no discussion of smoke inhalation or using gas masks.
